I have a dial up connection for the internet. What can I do to speed up my computer when surfing the internet
I get my dial up connection free so I prefer to stay with the dial up connection. The problem is that it is very slow in loading up pages. Would additional memory help or what type of things can a person do to speed things up on internet surfing? My Dell computer is about 2 years old and works great with other applications such as excel worksheets, etc. It seems that loading up the advertising every time you go to a new page is one of the biggest problem. Is their software that can block the advertising? Do I need to get more RAM memory? Do i need to clear things off my computer such as in the temporary internet file? I would appreciate comments from any computer geeks or experts that might be out there. Please note that I want to stay with the dial-up connection. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
I also have dial-up; I hate it, but it’s all that I have access to here. My CPU is not the greatest in the world either; is an original Windows 98 OS upgraded to XP OS [bought it used], but there were no other upgrades.
* Note: I read the above answer, & gave it a “Thumbs-Down” – “Dial-Up” is slow, but the CPU itself has a lot to do with speed.
~ 1 months ago, doubled my RAM; from 128 Mb to 256 Mb; THIS REALLY HELPED – MUCH FASTER. I have heard, many times, a CPU can not have too much RAM – the more, the better, although I’m sure there is a max. limit additional RAM speed that will help with a dial-up connection.
Changing the Modem may also help; many newer Modems can operate faster than older ones.
My average speed here is ~ 28 Kbs – am using an older 56K modem – I think a newer one would help.
I aslo came to find out land-line dial-up is only required to run a mim. of 21 Kbs – unbelievable, huh.
I would increase RAM first, & see how much it helps – then, if you think you need faster, try changing modem.
Good Luck,
Ken C.
