Far too many businesses are still caught up in the old way of advertising. They do the whole yellow page thing, and advertise in the newspaper. Some do radio, and even cable advertising. Most small businesses in the community do some direct mail, and yet, when things are a little tight, and the consumer stops spending all the suddenly nothing seems to be working. This is because a company or small business can often get more “bang for their buck” using alternative marketing scenarios.
When I say alternative marketing, I don’t necessarily mean online marketing, which seems to be the new big thing. Some small businesses have taken up blogging, or tried to buy keywords on search engines, but even that doesn’t seem to work for them, and all they do is spend all their time and money on something that doesn’t work, just because it is cheaper, or perceived to be more bang for the buck.
Indeed, it might be more bang for the buck than let’s say radio, or a newspaper ad which has a shelf life of basically one day, but that doesn’t mean you should do it just because it’s better than what doesn’t work. In reality local small businesses do much better when they do promotions, public relations, and local branding by doing nonprofit work, or helping out the community.
Why not get more involved in your local community. Next time there’s a big fundraiser going on, why not volunteer to assist, and allow your business to help out in the nonprofit endeavors? Not only is it a good thing to do for your community, but it will be noticed by your customers, and your future customers.
Over the years, our company became quite famous in the communities we served because we were all about helping out. We wanted to give a little back as we grew, and a funny thing happened along the way. All of our philanthropic efforts double and tripled our business, allowing us to do even more in the community. The net result was; everyone was a winner.
