Tungsten Software

Lawnmower blades get abused quite a bit during their normal operations by way of wear and tear. Just like paper, blades of grass are actually very abrasive. You have spent a lot of money on the purchase of your lawn mower, but you are still using that old style blade. Time to upgrade. In order to thermal spray your lawn mower blades, you need to first of all clean it thoroughly with a solvent such as acetone. Then the body of the blade where no cutting takes place needs to be masked off. This is done by using high temperature tape designed specially for thermal spray coating operations. The masking should be such as to expose the blade surface just a little bit beyond the cutting edges. The next operation is grit blasting to develop a mechanical profile on the surface of the blade. Remember, thermal spray coatings are bonded to the surface by mechanical means and hence a clean surface with a good profile goes a long way in developing a good bond.

Now a bond coat with a material such as nickel-aluminum is preferred. This bond coat simply enhances the adhesion of the subsequent top coat; just like primer before paint. For the top coat, use tungsten-carbide-cobalt deposited by the plasma spray process. Apply a reasonable thickness and then remove all masking. Next, you need to grind the coating properly to develop the sharpness of the blade profile. Now you have a tungsten-carbide coated lawn mower blade It is preferable that you use the services of a reputable thermal spray shop, because the parameters used in depositing the coating are important and they can be the difference between getting good wear resistance and not so good results. Again, as always, check with the original equipment manufacturer if your process of coating the blades is acceptable or not from their safety and warranty standpoint, because they may have specific clauses that may not allow this.
